Alignment Terminology

In successful layouts, alignment is essential for an effective layout. There are a variety of types of alignment for type including Flush Left, Flush Right, Centered, and Justified. All types of alignment have positives and negatives with their usage. There are also cultural considerations associated with alignment.

Flush Left, Rag Right
Most commonly called left-aligned. Text is aligned evenly on the left side with the right side ragged or uneven.
Flush Right, Left Rag
Most commonly called right-aligned. Text is aligned evenly on the right side with the left side ragged or uneven.
Centered
Text is aligned along central axis with a rag on both sides.
Justified
Text is evenly aligned on both the right and left sifes.
